Thought For The Week (TFTW)

The “Thought For The Week” started out as a topic of conversation that allowed pupils and staff to engage, discuss and debate on a variety of different issues during the pastoral period.  Our school uses a vertical tutoring system which means that during the twenty minute pastoral period pupils from different year groups and ages are brought together.

This system has helped many pupils to raise their self asteem, confidence and resilience. Older pupils become role models and mentors offering first hand knowledge of school life and experiences.  Pupils are less afraid to engage and discuss but more importantly they are given a platform to be heard.  As the school has developed the “Thought For The Week” is now an integral part of the pupils learning and allows pupils to broaden their knowledge of a variety of subject matter.  We include Literacy and Numeracy challenges to help support the skills they learn in the classroom.  We promote a welsh phrase of the week for pupils to learn and enhance their opportunities to use Curriculum Cymraeg both in and outside of the classroom. We include an act of worship for pupils to reflect and discuss their views and opinions.

More importantly we use a variety of media to engage the pupils including video clips, challenges, quizzes, competitions, individual and groups tasks, numeracy & literacy workbooks and reward pupils with GEM points that go towards College totals.

Below shows a sample of the topics we discuss throughout the year and also a PDF document showing an example of the work we discuss:-
