Design and Technology at KS3 is delivered to fulfill the requirements of the National Curriculum. We offer our students at KS3 a broad and diverse range of experiences across all material areas. We encourage creative design and help them to develop a sound subject knowledge to enable them to confidently embark onto our GCSE courses.  Our students have lots of practical experiences in D&T including cooking in our state of the art food rooms, Graphic Design and Resistant Materials in our fully equipped workshops and Textiles in our purpose built textiles workroom.
There are 4 main projects across the different material areas in both year 7 & 8.  Every child is expected to complete a literacy and/or numeracy based ‘Own-work’ task in each project. This task is carried out independently over a 2 week period and will be topic based.  This task is assessed and allows the pupils to work independently and show their knowledge and understanding of the topic.
We are already looking to expand the courses on offer next year so that we can widen the experiences and opportunities for our students.  So watch this space!

The D&T team at Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen has a shared vision for the department, which is in creating an exciting and vibrant learning environment for the students, that embraces new technologies, but retains the best of traditional practices to underpin students’ knowledge and skills.  All team members feel valued and we work together to build a department that provides a quality D&T education within a vibrant and dynamic learning environment; as well as a holistic approach to teaching and learning.

We offer our students an exciting and challenging experience across the whole department where they can develop the essential life skills and knowledge and understanding they need to enter the competitive world of higher education and work!
My Team will always go the ‘extra mile’ to support the students in the department to not only achieve their potential but also to give them the enjoyment and quality learning experiences that they deserve.
We have high expectations of behaviour and will not allow any student to disrupt the learning of others.  More able and talented students are identified early and are challenged and supported to reach their potential.  We have regular after school sessions Monday to Thursday to allow our GCSE and A level students to catch up with coursework, have extra support or simply get advice on how to improve their work.
We are about to start a STEM extra curricular design club this month after school for Year 8 students.  Mr Phelps will be co-ordinating this and looking for enthusiastic and budding designers/engineers! This will be a chance for students to take part in a fun and hands-on practical activity and will be particularly useful to any students considering our GCSE courses next year.  Some of our students have already had successful off site visits this term to the mental health seminar in Merthyr and the innovations awards in Cardiff.  We also have an engineering workshop from CITB at the school for our 60 engineering students this coming term.
My expectation of my team is that we collaboratively offer our students a first class experience in their D&T lessons.
We thrive to create a vibrant and exciting learning environment where the students can develop skills through enjoyment of the D&T subjects.  We support each other to share good practice and develop innovative teaching methods to enable us to challenge and engage our students.
