At KS4 and 5 the department enjoys a great deal of success. Not only with examination results but also with the building of skills and confidence which in turn challenges students to push boundaries and set exciting and topical projects for themselves. The GCSE, BTEC and A level courses require independent study, self-motivation and a real passion for a subject that is considered one of the most important, creative and enjoyable in the curriculum.
The Art team are dedicated, enthusiastic and skilled practitioners who have a real love of their subject. We share a vision for the department where all feel valued and all work together to create an atmosphere and environment where students strive to achieve.
Students are supported and encouraged to reach their full potential in the development of their knowledge and skills. After school sessions are offered on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday every week in order to extend and support portfolios.
Good behaviour is paramount in the studios. We have high expectations of our students and will not allow poor behaviour to impact on the learning of others.
The Department enjoys working with outside agencies, Artists and Craft workers. Recently our students had the pleasure to be an integral part of the designing of the sculpture that stands proudly outside our school gates. David Annand and Rhian Edwards (Sculptor and Poet) conducted lively workshops that impacted on the final designs.
Each year the A level students put on an exhibition of their work. The moderator’s report 2015 commented “ The candidates have had a very creative experience on the course and have gained mature insights into the world of Art through context, the design process and making skills.”
Many of our students go on to study degrees in Art & Design in colleges in London and various colleges around the country and have secured positions with prestigious companies such as Nike; others have set up their own creative businesses in fashion and surface pattern and ceramics.
Inspirational talks, which help promote our subject, include Jonathan Kyle Farmer, former student of the school.
Kyle is now an Associate Professor in New York teaching fashion design in society. (Endorsed by Donna Karen) The message to all our students is AIM HIGH.
